Looking into the eyes of a free dolphin at sea, I can say that this is one of the best experiences that can happen to a human being. I sat back and began to swim backwards, the small group of dolphins was over me and I tried to get close to them, but I was too slow for them at this stage of descent, so with a single, vigorous push they passed me and went down in depth. I was once again fascinated by such power and speed. I followed them for a while, I looked for them in the changing colors of the water that the sun and the seaweed drew upon me, and then they disappeared into the blue Caribbean water. We were about eighteen miles south of North Bimini in the ocean. There was water everywhere, nothing but water. The sea was rough, about force four, and the ocean in these conditions is not the best. The sky was becoming overcast and it would soon begin to rain. We were all in the water around the boat, trying to climb up on board: the dolphins, meanwhile, were jumping further and further away from us. We could see their dorsal fins away in a continuous rhythmic jump. We were on a sand bank, a sea zone, where the water is shallower, and right here, on the sandy bottom, the dolphins hunt in groups. We decided to climb back into the boat. The current was very strong and, as we started to swim towards the boat, the captain, seeing that we were getting tired, brought the boat to us. To come back on the boat was not a simple operation. The sea we slamming against the stern platform, and, all at once, we took off our fins, our equipment, our masks, grabbing the ladder and climbing back up on the boat. It was long and complicated. One by one we climbed.
"Is everybody in?" asked the commander.
"We hope!!" ... .added an indefinite voice..
At the stern of the boat we seemed to be in an Arab bazaar, everyone wanted to talk at once and share their feelings. It was interesting to try to understand how each of us played in their own way with what they had seen in the water.
"These were really great!" exclaimed Ronn.
"Yes, it's true ... they had no fear at all, they even seemed happy to swim with us!" added Simone.
"I'm dead tired...." Pedro said. "Itâs been so long since Iâve been in a situation like this... what an experience!" He said, sitting on the stern.
It was about 6pm, after many hours of work at sea, and we were heading back towards firm land. The sun was still strong and when it peeked out of the dark clouds, it was strongly felt. The day went by very quickly and after about nine hours of sea water and boat, we returned to North Bimini. Tiredness had taken precedence over all of us and no one on board spoke. The colors of a fantastic sunset were the setting for our slow yet very intense return.
